Kajaani Girls’ Den and its Big Sibling program are aimed at someone who identifies as a girl, woman or non-binary,  or someone who is curious about their gender, lives in the Kajaani region and is between 10-28 of age. We welcome everyone; everyone is worthy and of value just as they are. The Girl’s Den is a  safer space free from any kind of discrimination.

Family, friends and partners are more than welcome to come and learn about our activities also outside our opening hours.  Please reserve visiting time by phone or e-mail. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions!  We value your feedback and want to develop our organisation with our affiliate’s wishes in mind.

Please wear a mask and only attend if you are completely healthy. Remember to take special care of hand hygiene: wash your hands regularly and use hand sanitiser. The kitchen area is limited to supervisors only and snacks will be served for a couple of smaller groups in order to maintain social distancing.

Here, you can be yourself without fear of discrimination or bullying. Come alone or with friends, it’s up to you. At the Girl’s Den, you determine who you are and what you would like to do.

The open living room is a place where you can hang out and spend time with other girls and trustworthy adults. The living room is open on Thursdays 4 pm-8 pm. Snacks will be served.

Timetables and age range

For 10–15-year-olds on Tuesdays from 2 pm to 6 pm  and on Thursdays from 4 pm to 8 pm.
Young people over the age of 16 can come to the living room events on Thursdays from 4 pm to 8 pm. Night cafe is open every last Friday of the month from 7 pm to 11 pm.

Group and individual activities

The Den’s activities also include important professionally supervised group and individual work. Our aim is to support each individual’s growth and development through communication and friendship.

Groups are set up according to the wishes and needs of our visitors. There are two types of group activities: open floor, where you can without pre-registration, and closed, where you must register in advance with a supervisor. Group activities can be, for example, a hobby group, a discussion group or an experience-based peer group. Ideas and suggestions for the group’s subjects are encouraged, and we try to accommodate everyone’s wishes as much as possible.

Overlapping with our other activities, we offer individual support to those who need.

Together, we also sometimes make excursions to nearby areas and various events based on the suggestions we receive from our Den visitors. Tours and events are planned together, and participation is always free of charge.

For volunteers

Big Siblings are adult volunteers who act as friends and support in the everyday life and growth of their Little Siblings.

The aim of this program is for youths aged 10-15 to find their own Big Sibling and meet 1 – 4 times a month. You can also participate in Big Sibling activities as a Den Sibling during our open living room events, and during our other events and excursions.

Acting as a Big Sibling is rewarding voluntary work: both sides of the sibling couple are involved in the activities of their own free will.

Participation in the Big Sibling program requires completion of the Big Sibling training. Based on  registration and interviews, trainings are usually arranged during Autumn and Spring. In addition, recreational activities, further training and support will be arranged for The Big Siblings. Remember that you are never alone, help and advice is always available from the Den’s instructors.

Please note that before a Big Sibling can have a Little Sibling, Girl’s Den will need a copy of Big Sibling’s criminal record for safety reasons.

Work with us

Girl’s Den activities are strongly based on co-operative work, and we aim to create innovative ways of communication with local and national actors.

Together we carry out for example, in small groups, excursions and events. More information can be acquired through pre-arranged visits at the Girl’s Den.

Girl’s Den is an excellent place for internships or work on thesis/finals if you are studying for example, sociology, nursing, community pedagogy or youth and community instructorship. With us, you can complete training periods of different lengths from several weeks to months, and schedules are flexible.

Our internships may include e.g. supervising girls during our open sessions, leading groups, planning and executing events, excursions and holiday activities, and program development.
